Stage 1 -

Ardmair to Isle Martin

Our first active travel day involved 2 miles of swimming across to Ullapool's community-owned island of Isle Martin.

We were accompanied by artist and boat driver, Angelica Kroeger, who gave us a tour of the island spaces and shared her knowledge about the history of the island. Ailsa has been a swimmer for 15 years and has much experience of open-water swimming from her triathlon years. This was Nellie's longest ever open-water swim, and such a great one to start with! It just goes to show that it is easily achievable with the right safety measures in place (tow-floats, buddies, or a very handy pair of kayakers!)

Alongside this, we had our first site visit to Quinag, in North-West Scotland. We joined a walk and activity session led by Romany Garnett (Conservation Officer for Quinag and Sandwood) and Lynn Munro (Seasonal Ranger for Sandwood). We developed a film that showcased the importance of navigation and the freedom and confidence that this can give people to access the outdoors.
